7 Unconventional Ways To Create a Bedroom Headboard
For many of us, purchasing a brand new bed is out of the question. There’s either a shortage of square footage or a shortage of disposable cash. Especially if you’ve just moved into an apartment in Brooklyn. There’s not much left after you’ve paid all the apartment fees, utility costs, and moving expenses. But that doesn’t mean you can’t pull off a stylish apartment.
In your bedroom in particular, it’s possible to create a cohesive design you can be proud of. Forego buying all new furniture. Start with the headboard. Here are a 7 unconventional, and economical headboard alternatives…
1. Let a room divider anchor your bed.
This is not only a great headboard alternative, but it couldn’t be easier to install. Just choose a room divider that complements your overall bedroom decor and situate it between your bed and the wall. The beauty of this simple solution is that there’s no work, installation, or tools involved!
2. Hang a vintage rug or tapestry on the wall over your bed.
Before you sell that old area rug you got from your grandmother, consider displaying it on the wall over your bed. Not only will it be a beautiful art piece in your bedroom, but you’ll be anchoring your bed with this faux headboard.
3. Use large, floor pillows.
Two or three of these floor pillows can serve as a headboard behind your bed also. Make sure to get sturdy, supportive ones that won’t flop over.
4. Repurpose a garden trellis.
Have you ever noticed how much those iron garden trellises resemble wrought iron bedroom pieces? Even a wooden garden trellis can make a beautiful headboard. Just secure to the wall, and the stud if necessary, with a couple of nails.
5. Let the back of another furniture piece do double duty.
This works if you’re in a small space and already using a couple of wardrobes to keep your clothes tucked away. Instead of positioning them along a wall, pull them a good distance into your space, turn them around, and slide your bed up to the back of them. This can also work with a desk and a hutch, or tall shelves for a bookcase headboard.
6. Reclaim and recycle an old door.
The best doors to use for this are the ones with the most character. The ones with interesting moldings constructed of quality wood are perfect, even if they’re a little rough. Depending on the size of the doors, you could lean them against the wall for a “no tools needed” installation. Otherwise, you’ll need to purchase some mounting hardware appropriate for the weight of your door.
7. Wall shelves can fill the space on the wall behind your bed.
Shelves over your bed, either a tall bookshelf or individual shelves mounted on the wall, serve two purposes; They’re an attractive headboard but also practical storage or display space.
